Analogue AfterImages
FableType is the visual world of The Universal Fairytale.
The illustrations, light cuttings and atmosphere of the picture books are reimagined as an installation that people can enter and experience for themselves.
The installation is built from original handcrafted light cuttings, creating an environment that preserves the character of the original works while allowing them to exist beyond the page.
Portrait photography forms part of the installation rather than documenting it.
Each portrait is created within the fairytale itself, preserving a moment in which the visitor becomes part of its world.
Every analogue afterimage is made by hand using traditional photographic printing and fine art printmaking.
The portfolio includes historic nineteenth-century processes such as the daguerreotype, ambrotype, tintype, albumen print, salt print, platinum print, photogravure and cyanotype, alongside contemporary printmaking methods that continue these traditions.
No two prints are alike.
The same portrait becomes a different object in each process: iridescent on silvered copper, luminous on glass, Prussian blue on watercolour paper, or richly impressed into handmade paper.
Visitors choose how their moment inside the fairytale is carried out of it.
